Since June 2015: New for citizens from several countries is the Visa-Free; gratis but only available in appointed entry points.
The five international airports through which these citizens can enter Indonesia visa-free are Soekarno-Hatta in Jakarta, Ngurah Rai in Bali, Kuala Namu in Medan, Juanda in Surabaya and Hang Nadim in Batam.

Sri Bintan and Tanjung Uban seaports in Bintan Island and Sekupang and Batam Center ports in Batam will also provide the facility.

These 30 additional countries will be granted visa-free access for short term stays (30 days, non extendable):
China, Japan, South Korea, United States, Canada, New Zealand, Mexico, Russia, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Austria, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Sweden, Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Oman, Kuwait and South Africa.

Visitors with the visa-free facility will be able to proceed directly to the immigration clearance counter after deplaning. Passport must be valid for a minimum of six months from the date of arrival. Onward or return tickets must be shown on arrival.

Since June 2010 it is possible to obtain a 30 day Visa-on-Arrival at Banda Aceh Airport. Current price is 35 US$, which can be paid in all major currencies or Indonesian Rupiah.

Since 2010 you can extend your 30-day visa-on-arrival with another 30 days at any immigration office in Indonesia.

Visa requirements for Indonesia

30-day Visa Free Facility : The citizens of countries whose governments offer visa-free facility to Indonesians as well, will continue to enjoy visa-free stays. The 15 countries that are granted the 30-day visa-free facility are: Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Chile, Ecuador, Hongkong, Laos, Macao, Malaysia, Myanmar, Morocco, Peru, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam

These 30 additional countries will be granted visa-free access for short term stays (30 days, non extendable) at 5 airports, Medan, Jakarta, Bali, Surabaya, Batam only:
China, Japan, South Korea, United States, Canada, New Zealand, Mexico, Russia, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Austria, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Sweden, Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Oman, Kuwait and South Africa.

30-day Visa-On-Arrival : The nationals of 63 countries will be able to apply for a visa-on-arrival valid for 30 days in Indonesia. A 30 day visit visa costs US$ 35.

This Visa-on-Arrival is 1 time extendable with another 30 days at any immigration office in Indonesia for Rp 250.000.

The countries are: Algeria, the Arab Emirates, Argentina, Austria, Australia, Bahrain, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Cambodia, Canada, China, Czech Republic, Cyprus, Denmark, Egypt, Estonia, Fiji, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, India, Iran, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Kuwait, Latvia, Libya, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Maldives, Malta, Mexico, Monaco, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Panama, Poland, Portugal, Oman, Qatar, Romania, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Suriname, Taiwan, Timor Leste, Tunesia, United Kingdom and United States

Citizens of countries not on the visa-on-arrival or visa-free lists have to apply for a visa at an Indonesian Embassy or consulate before entering Indonesia.

Other Visa
You can apply for a 30 day or a 60-day Tourist Visa or 60 day Social/Cultural Visa with a letter of invitation/sponsorship at an Indonesian Embassy or Consulate before entering Indonesia.
The Visa can be extended monthly –after the initial 60 days, till a maximum of 6 months.

Prices and processing time for applications differ quite a lot at the various embassies.

For example: the Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur charges 170 Malaysian Ringgit (~42 €) for a 60-day visa and have it ready the next working day, if you are lucky, the same afternoon; at the Consulate in Penang apply before 12:00 and it is ready the next (working) day afternoon. Application form can be downloaded. Bring 2 passport photo’s, photo copies of return tickets to Indonesia and of financial credibility (like proof of 2000 US $ in traveler cheques or a copy of the two sides of your credit card, and if so, just black out your numbers to be on the safe side).
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 more months after date of entry.

Embassies and consulates are open on working days from Monday to Friday. Closed on Public Holidays.

TIP: Make sure you dress properly: The embassy in KL annouces on their website www.kbrikualalumpur.org : ” NO SANDALS, NO SARONGS, NO SHORT SLEEVES, NO TANK TOP, AND NO SHORT PANTS (except for under 12 year old – children)”

Travel tips & practicalities

International ATM 

On Pulau Weh, there are ATM machines in Iboih village, a 7 minutes and Sabang town, a 30 minute drive away from Gapang Beach. Bank Mandiri accepts bankcards and creditcards connected to VISA & MasterCard and Maestro.

Bank Mandiri also installed a convenient ATM in Banda Aceh’s ferry port.

At the diveshop, we accept cash Euro, Rupiah or any major currency, and payments in Rupiah by VISA & MASTERCARD creditcards and by (internet) bank transfers. US Dollars are difficult to change, only bills in good condition with series newer than 2006 are accepted in the banks.

Safe Deposit facilities are available in the Living Room bungalows and in the diveshop.
